Is It Okay for Strangers to Touch Your Natural Hair?

By Nicole Marie Melton via essence

I have big, fluffy, type 4 hair, so when I read about the “You Can Touch My Hair” exhibit in New York City, I wasn’t particularly shocked by the motives behind the topic.  It appears I’m part of a small minority. Since its debut last week, the exhibit has actually become a hot-button issue and come under fire as a “petting zoo” of sorts.  To be honest, I don’t see it that way at all.  In fact, I can easily relate to people wanting and asking to touch my hair. All. The. Time.

I’ve had my hair stroked by complete strangers, Black and White, wishing to cop a feel of my kinky halo. And every time this happens, the gesture is accompanied by compliments on my hair’s soft texture and unique style.

ESSENCE Poll: Has Wearing Natural Hair Affected Your Career?

By Nicole Marie Melton

In 2013, you’d think that Black women wouldn’t have to worry about our hair texture in the workplace, but there are a number of women who aren’t quite confident that is the case. Last week, Georgia State University hosted a panel discussion entitled “Black Women, Their Hair and The Work Place” where naturalistas sounded off about whether they felt their hair had an impact on their careers.

“You’re talking about being polished and (having) interview skills and yet no one is addressing the fact that natural black hair has been traditionally seen as not polished on its own whether it’s well cared for or not,” James “Jay” Bailey, chief executive officer of Operation HOPE and a panelist at the event, told SaportaReport. “So basically it’s all about maintaining the Eurocentric standpoint.”

take the survey here.

Do you think wearing natural hair still carries somewhat of a negative stigma in corporate environments? Although the natural hair trend is still growing and more women are confident about rocking their kinks and coils, do women feel we have to downplay our natural hair to achieve professional success? Take our poll and sound off in the comments section.

There’s a lot going on with Teyonah Parris’ hair and while we applaud her for trying something new, there’s too much going on here” –

…Erm What??? I’m really interested in finding the person that wrote that because they clearly didn’t see what the rest of the world saw. She looked beautiful and her hair was nothing short of stunning at the Sag Awards 2013.

Mad Men Actress Teyonah Parris wore a gorgeous pompadour updo for the Screen Actors Guild Awards created by superwoman herself, Felicia Leatherwood of Loving your hair with natural care.
