“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.” How Michelle Obama solidified the deal for Hillary Clinton

Michelle Obama is the “People’s Champ”! Last night she graced the stage at the Democratic National Convention to silence the critics, naysayers, and anyone who had any doubts or reservations on whether or not Hillary Clinton should be President.

In a moving speech that literally got everyone out of their seats, she shared with us her love for her two daughters and husband, her love for this country, and her love for Hillary Clinton.

Michelle’s speech went against the negative things that the media continuously paints about Hillary, to offer her supporters and non-supporters a look into who she really is a mother, wife, and public servant.

If you missed the taping of the convention yesterday, here it is again:

Here are some of the most powerful lines from last night’s speech:

  1. “Our motto is when they go low, we go high”
  2. “I trust Hillary to lead this country because I’ve seen her life long devotion to our nations children.”
  3. “There were plenty of moments when Hillary could’ve decided that this work was too hard. That the price of public service was too high, and tired of being picked apart for she looks, or how she talks or even how she laughs. But, the thing that I admire most about Hillary is that she never buckles under pressure…”
  4. “Because when you have nuclear codes at your fingertips and the military in your command you can’t make snap decisions.
  5. “I want a president with a record of public service. Someone whose life’s work shows our children that we don’t chase fame and fortune for ourselves, but fight for to give everyone a chance to succeed.
  6. “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And, I watch my daughters, two beautiful and intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And, because of Hillary Clinton my daughters and all of our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.

Here’s what President Obama had to say about Michelle’s speech #BaeWatch #RelationshipGoals:

Michelle PLEASE run for president!!! I beg of you!

Natural Hair Is Making Its Mark on The Pageant Scene: Dawn Matthews is Miss Black Florida USA

beyonce-pretty-hurts-ssTraditionally, beauty pageants have always been a superficial competition, focusing primarily on the physical beauty of its contestants.  Falling in line with the traditional standards of beauty, most of the women who have participated in these events have had to subject themselves to extreme diets, and the pressures of having to alter the way that they look, just to meet the standards of those judging them.

It has been a real challenge in the past for black women to gain this sort of recognition because of their natural curves, and naturally kinky, curly, or coily hair textures.

As the natural hair movement continues to gain popularity, and make its way onto the beauty scene, more and more women of color are stepping out and being recognized for their true, natural beauty.

Meet Dawn Matthews, Miss Black Florida USA 2015!

For four years, Dawn Matthews has been relaxer free. Starting with a big chop in 2011, she claims she has been through it all from heat damage to protective styles gone wrong. “It’s definitely a journey but its worth it, some days it’s rough and other days I feel like my hair and I can conquer the world. Dawn will compete in the 2015 Miss Black USA pageant held in Washington DC in August. She hopes to not only win the title but also to use her platform to broaden the scope of pageant perfection. “I think it’s important in the world of pageantry for black women to showcase their natural hair or even just embrace natural styles. Little girls with kinks and coils need to know that they don’t have to put chemicals in their hair or flat iron their hair to feel like a Queen and feel glamorous.

Dawn Yvonne Matthews has managed to inspire all those around her to achieve greatness. Using her personal setbacks and triumphs as motivation, she finds fulfillment in enlightening at-risk minority youth and young adults on the importance of education and cultural pride.

Born and raised in Delaware, Dawn’s family put a heavy emphasis on learning in their household. She recognized the importance of education early in life and considers education to be the great equalizer. Dawn received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Master’s in Educational Leadership from Virginia State University.  Her personal mottos include, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up” and “Education is the great equalizer”.

Her love for children and young adults is accompanied by her love for travel and music. Dawn has spent time in Cozumel, Mexico, Nassau, Bahamas and spent time in Cape Coast, Ghana volunteering in local primary schools. She hopes to visit all 50 states and every continent.

Dawn aspires to open a non-profit organization whose goal is to instill the importance of education and cultural pride to at-risk and minority youth. She will be representing Florida during the 2015 Miss Black USA national competition in August in Washington D.C.

We wish you the best of luck Dawn!

How Music Snatched me Bald This Week

Kid Fury, a great modern philosopher, often compares Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s combination of vocal ability, performance expertise and undeniable beauty to ones edges being violently snatched from ones scalp. This has always resonated with me, because there’s no doubt that Queen Bey has a way of throwing so much greatness in your face all at once that it’s just rude, it’s so unexpectedly mesmerizing that I often feel like a part of my being, like my baby hairs, has been ripped away without warning – but I don’t mind at all.

screen-shot-2014-07-30-at-9-47-38-amThis week, the world of hip-hop and R&B has left me near bald yet again. It all started with Janelle Monae’s release of her latest video for “Electric Lady.” This song has always been a favorite of mine – it’s fun and upbeat, and the way you’re seamlessly introduced to its infectious beat after “Q.U.E.E.N.” on Monae’s album always gets me. But the visual for the song is even better. In it, Monae literally lets her hair down, revealing the most beautiful array of natural curls that I’ve ever seen, and gets down at what looks like the college house party of my dreams – there’s dancing, stepping, and also a T.I. appearance (plus cameos from Kimbra, T-Boz, Esperanza Spaulding, Monica, and Estelle) It was too good. Edges: gone.

Remy-Ma-DJ-Khaled_0Next, hip-hop legend Remy Ma came home. After serving 6 years in a woman’s correctional facility (“Orange is the New Black” realness) the rapper was finally released this week. However, as soon as she got out, the former Terror Squad member wasted no time. She was in the studio with DJ Khaled the next day and recorded a “They Don’t Love You No More” Remix, and believe me, her verse sounds like six years of preparation – it’s fire. However, I as well as many other fans didn’t even get the chance to process her homecoming yet; to hope, to dream about the possibilities before she decided to unleash this. Edges: burned.

FLAWLESS-BEYONCE-MINAJAnd then, there was Beyoncé. To be honest, I shouldn’t be surprised by her behavior considering the fact that she stole edges across the world like a thief in the night when she unexpectedly dropped the her self-titled album. However, she got me again. Beyoncé casually released a “Flawless” remix this weekend featuring none other than Nicki Minaj. If you haven’t noticed, Nicki’s also been killing it lately. She’s giving great hair, has starred in movies, and has released her best work in years. (“Bang Bang” her collab with Ariana Grande and Jessie J is still at the top of the charts and her much awaited single “Anaconda” is set to release on Tuesday) But on top of all, they decided to just drop a song on us that can only be described as flawless. Not only does Beyonce match Nicki’s level of slay-age as she affirms that she’s the baddest, but she addresses that infamous surveillance video with the line “Of course sometimes s— goes down when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator.” … Bald.

Feel free to enjoy all of this music while I wait for my hair to grow back.

Thousands Demand Beyonce Comb Her Daughter’s Hair

Thousands of people have signed a petition asking Beyoncé and Jay Z to comb their daughter’s hair.

Once 2,490 more people sign and the stated goal of 5,000 signatures is reached, nothing will happen. But it’s all become very controversial.

The petition:

As a woman who understands the importance of hair care. It’s disturbing to watch a child suffering from the lack of hair moisture. The parents of Blue Ivy. Sean Carter A.K.A Jay-Z and Beyoncé has failed at numerous attempts of doing Blue Ivy Hair. This matter has escalated to the child developing matted dreads and lint balls. Please let’s get the word out to properly care for Blue Ivy hair.

And elsewhere:

“She doesn’t have naturally straight hair, she has natural curly hair, and it has the right and free will to go in any direction that it chooses,” a stylist who specializes in textured and curly hair told the New York Daily News. “And to think it should do anything else – you would be suggesting a standard of beauty that is supposed to be imposed on a toddler, and that’s insane.”

Someone named Jasmine, who apparently authored the petition, responded to the criticism Thursday on her Facebook page:

It’s a clever joke.! Nobody came up with before. … My hair looks like blue ivy right now except its moisturized and detangled. Yes I’m natural.! … I can care less about Beyoncé or jay z but I do care for the kids hair. People make nothing out of something. I love being black! I’m proud my bloodline runs from Africa. I’m proud of my own tightly coiled kinks. I’m proud of my big lips and brown skin. People just need to breathe and chill out.

It all seems pretty important. Whose side are you on?

We Should All be Feminists: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Video Inside)

“A feminist is a man or a woman who says yes there is a problem with gender as is today, and we must fix it. We must do better”- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

These words resonate through my ears as I listen to Chimamanda Adichie speak words of encouragement on the topic of gender separation.  For many of us, we first heard this strong powerful speech, in Beyonce’s hit song “Flawless”, which ultimately fueled my interest in hearing more of her speech.  We as women are taught from adolescence to down play ourselves in the likes of men.  We are taught that we can achieve a certain level of success but never to the same level as men.  These teachings have ultimately made us content with mediocracy and submissiveness.  Feminism is more than just about women fighting for their place in society, but its about having equality among both women and men.

“The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are.”- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

REMIX-This Is How Beyonce’s Drunk In Love Would Sound In The 1940′s

Posted by: Adam Danyal

Scott Bradlee is back with another great vintage cover. This time taking Beyonce’s hit single ‘Drunk In Love’ back in time to the 1940′s with singer Cristina Gatti.

Cristina’s great voice and the big band definitely makes this unique cover totally different from the original. Right in the middle, it feels like something is missing then that sax hits. Amazing.

What do you think?
