We’ve all heard the timeless adage that beauty is pain; unfortunately, whoever came up with this phrase forgot to mention that beauty is also expensive.
If you’ve read my previous post, you already know that I’m a MAC Cosmetics lover; but let’s face it, even the drug store, or beauty supply brands are not particularly cheap. To apply a “full face” of makeup you need foundation, concealer, eye shadow, eyelashes, mascara, eyeliner (liquid and pencil for me), lip-gloss or lipstick, and the list can literally go on and on and on and… you get the point. What I’ve listed above are only the products that you see, and unless you’re applying these products with your fingers, you’ll need a full set of brushes in order to complete your look. I always use MAC as an example, and if you look on their website, there are literally 50 different brushes to choose from, all with their own unique function. The average person would not need, or know how to use most of these brushes; but even for the essential brushes, you can easily find yourself spending at least $100. Now of course, you could opt for a local beauty supply brand of brushes, but an even cheaper option is to use paintbrushes.
I know, I know, sounds crazy, right? Well not so much…makeup is, for the most part, the same consistency as paint, and furthermore, makeup brushes are mimicked after paintbrushes. If you go into your local Michael’s Arts and Crafts store, you can find many of the same makeup brushes on MAC’s website, at a much cheaper price. To illustrate my point, here is a picture of a paintbrush that I personally purchased from Michael’s Arts and Crafts (on the left), beside a picture of a very similar brush sold on MAC’s website (on the right).
As you can see, the differences are minimal, the price being the biggest one. My brush from Michael’s cost under $5.00, while MAC’s brush is $34.00.
So as a makeup newbie, you don’t necessarily have to “break the bank” to look fabulous, and although we can’t really do much about the painful part, beauty doesn’t have to be expensive.
Kisses, Hugs, and Lots of Love,
