Great Products for TWAs!

Hey curly girls! Just wanted to share with you all a few great videos I found.  Each videos is especially tailored to TWA ladies!

Right after you big chop and have a TWA, you may be desperate to find things that work to keep your hair moisturized.  FEAR NOT! The videos I have posted below have many different things for you to try that will help you out in your journey.  You may already be feeling like a bit of a product junkie, but that’s okay.  It’s normal to freak out a little bit and keep running to the store, seeking a miracle product that will transform your hair.  Keep it in check though, or you WILL break your bank.  

The products used in the videos below are all ones that I have tried before and like, and I felt that each of the ladies did a great job explaining them.

HUMIDITY AND NATURAL HAIR: How to Deal with It.

Humidity is not much fun, especially when you have curly hair.  Some of us get hair that shrinks up, while others get hair that frizzes out and swells.  This article is geared towards those who have hair that shrinks up in humidity (like mine).  I’d comment on the other half, those who’s hair frizzes up, but I just don’t have experience in that area. 

So then, all you curly girls out there with hair that shrinks up tight when it’s humid, listen up!  Below are a few tips that you should read if you want to learn to deal with your hair in the humidity.  Happy Reading!

 

1)   Don’t Fight Your Shrinkage.

Alright ladies, I know this one doesn’t sound like much fun, but it’s really the first and most important step in caring for natural hair in humidity.  Your hair will likely draw up as the moisture enters it from the atmosphere, so don’t waste time stretching it out unless your going to put it into some sort of protective style.  Shrinkage is annoying yes, but it’s just something that goes along with natural hair.  The sooner you embrace that, the sooner you’re on your way to being happy with your hair in the humidity.

 

2)   Use flax seed gel, and modify accordingly.

I LOVE flaxseed gel.  I’ve said it before, and I’m sure ill say it again before this paragraph is over.  Flaxseed gel is one of the most versatile styling agents you can ever hope to come across. I use it when it’s humid.  I use it when it’s dry.  SAME results, always.  You can add things in to change up the formula on a whim.  Take marshmallow root for example.  If you need extra hold when using flax seed gel in a humid climate, you can add in marshmallow root.  It increases the hold phenomenally.  You can also choose the consistency of flaxseed gel.  If you want light hold, boil it for just a few minutes.  If you need it thicker, and stronger, then boil it for longer and use less water.  Easy! It doesn’t get easier than that ladies.  That’s why I LOVE flaxseed gel! J

 

3)   Wear protective styles.

If you’re sick of dealing with the humidity and you are tired or messing with shrinkage, put your hair away for a while.  Give yourself a break, you deserve it! Get some braids or twists put in if your hair is to short to protective style with buns and updos and etc.  What’s the worst thing that could happen?  You’ll give your hair a rest and give it time to relax and grow!

 

4)   Try Something New.

Try out a few new products that are especially made or well known for fighting humidity.  I found a great article here that lists at least ten you could find and try.  You could also try out a new cut.  Get something that looks good with your curls drawn up and shrunken.  Get adventurous and get going!

DIY Facial Masks Recipes for All Skin Types

Have you ever noticed the ingredients on the back of a store bought facial mask product? It’s difficult to understand how to even pronounce half of those ingredients. So why apply it to your skin when you don’t know if it’s good for you?

The face is one of the most important assets on your body to care for. Using natural products is best suitable to keep the skin moisturized and rejuvenated. That’s why you should try out these 3 simple recipes that are inexpensive, organic and can be used in the comfort of your own home.

Oats are an excellent exfoliant. It softens the skin, removes dead cells and cleans your clogged pores. The honey helps to relieve inflamed skin, alleviates dryness and is used as a skin lightening agent.

Ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp of oats
  • 1 tsp of honey
  1. Mix whole oats with warm water into a paste
  2. Add a teaspoon of honey 
  3. Then, rub the cleanser onto your skin in circular motions and leave it on your face for 10 minutes 
  4. Rinse it off with warm water or use a warm washcloth (your preference)

Yogurt is not only a snack; it actually gets rid of acne! Follow these simple steps to alleviate any pesky pimples from forming.

Ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp natural yogurt, room temperature (not lowfat or non-fat) and make sure it’s isn’t flavored yogurt to avoid irritability of the skin. 
  • 1 tsp of honey (put in microwave for a few seconds to soften the honey). For dry skin, use an extra tsp of honey 
  1. Combine mixture, then apply to face.
  2. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Wash face with steaming washcloth
  4. Pat dry with towel

Egg whites works wonders if you have oily skin! It also repairs damaged tissues and maintains your youthful radiant glow.

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon of honey
  1. Wash your face with warm water to open up your pores.
  2. Use your clean hands or a cotton ball to apply the mixture onto your face, avoiding the sensitive areas around your mouth and eyes.
  3. Keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes.
  4. When the mixture has completely dried on your face, gently scrub it off using warm water.
  5. Pat dry with a towel and marvel the smooth feel of your skin!

Stretching Your Curls: A lesson on Blow Drying Your Roots

Ah, the quest for lessening natural hair shrinkage!  It seems like every week I see a new product that claims to elongate, stretch or loosen curls for natural hair.  At first, I jumped on the bandwagon with every one that came out. The only thing I got from any of the products I ran out to buy was a dwindling bank account and the same shrunken hair I had before using anything.  I’ve come to terms with the fact that there is likely no miracle product out there that will make your curls longer.  There are, however, techniques that you can master to achieve curl elongation.  Today, I’d like to discuss my favorite one: blow drying those roots!

Now, if you are the type of curly girl who shys away from blow dryers, ALWAYS, then this post is not for you.  I used to be that way until I found the benefits of using a blow dryer here and there.  Blow-drying is not something that should be done daily or with extreme heat, but it’s not THE DEVIL either.  The method I’m referring to today only calls for blow-drying once every few days, and you can do it with low heat.  So you get great results with minimal damage.  Here are the steps:

1)   Wash and condition your hair, finishing up with a good water+vinegar rinse

2)   Get  4 ouchless hair bands and partition your hair into 4 sections (two in the front and two in the back.

3)   Apply an oil (preferably a heat protectant oil like grape seed oil), then your leave in, then a styler, then your favorite gel, raking each product through, one at a time.

4)   Put the hair in the section back into the ouchless hair band and repeat the steps above on each section.

5)   Once you’ve raked all products through and placed all your hair back into the bands.  Carefully slide the bands down to the middle of each section.  Place your fingers gently around your hair and lightly pull, just enough to stretch the curls and create some tension.

6)   Get your diffuser, set it on low and blow dry directly at your roots for 2 to 3 minutes on each section.  Move the dryer around.  Do on top underneath and on each side of the hair section. 

7)   Remove the bands from each of the 4 sections and give your hair a good shake!  From here, you can either let it air dry the rest of the way (shaking it periodically, so the curls don’t set sticking together) or give your hair another two minutes of blow-drying while holding your head upside down.  Try both ways to see which you like better. 

8)   Voila!! You’re roots are stretched, giving you elongated curls!

I’ve been doing this for the last three months, and I absolutely love it!  I haven’t noticed any significant changes to my hair thus far.  I mean, I haven’t seen any more knots or dryness than what’s usual for my hair.  I suggest you give it a try at least once to see if it works for you.  If you’re worried about damaging your hair, save it for special occasions when you really want to show off some length.  I hope this method helps you!

Running tips for beginners

I love running, but sometimes it sucks. I once took a few months off my normal running routine, and when I picked it back up again I was left wondering how the hell I ever made it more than two miles. Although it’s my preferred workout method, I know it can be a tough routine to stick with and improve upon. So, here are a few tips if you’re new to running or looking to increase your mileage.

For Beginners:

Start slow if you’re brand new to running. Use a walk/run approach where you alternate running and walking for a few minutes. How many minutes you start off jogging will depend on your personal fitness, but gradually increase the amount you’re jogging each week. Start with ten to 20 minutes of alternating between walking and running. And work up to 30 minutes of continuous jogging three times a week.

How to Run Longer Distances:

Run the distance you normally run three times a week, and twice a week add one more mile to your run. So if you normally run 3 miles, do a 4-mile run twice that week. The following week, run 4 miles three days a week and add in two 5-mile runs. This is the method I use to build my mileage, but it may differ person to person. You could spend two weeks, maybe even three, building up to an extra mile. Just find what works the best for your body and schedule.

Additional Tips:

1.) Eat right – high protein foods are beneficial for longer runs

2.) Stretch and strengthen your core, as this will improve running technique

3.) Having the right shoes is REALLY important. Make sure you have a good, supportive pair of running shoes

4.) A 10- or 15-minute run is better than no exercise at all. So if you’re short on time one day, still run a mile!

5.) Finding a running buddy is a good way to make sure you stick to your routine and stay motivated

Research shows the hormonal connections between a regular healthy sex lifestyle and hair growth.

Regular sex influences the production of sex hormones such as androgens, which influence hair growth, and endorphins, a feel-good neurotransmitter that impacts both body, mind and soul subsequently promoting healthy hair growth!

A  scalp massage could have done the trick, but you would agree that sex is much more fun! Sexual activity gets your blood flowing, especially near the skin’s surface. In physiological response hair follicles receive more oxygenation and more nourishment ensuring ideal conditions for growth.

Regular sex is an option worth adding to your daily hair routine. But don’t be carried away. Too much of everything may have some unfavourable effects. Too much sexual activity can lead to the unhealthy over-production of testosterone and adrenaline, leading to possible hair loss, especially in men!

 

Nevertheless, regular sex a is a very justifiable hair growth stimulator. So ladies, it’s time to get our groove and go 200% natural!

Don’t Fear The Fall: Rise Up& Attack (Motivation)

We often get caught in a downward swirl. Nothing seems to work out as planned, obstacles keep popping up in the least expected moments and it looks as though all forces stand against us. In such scenarios, we give up when the going gets tough.

Fortunately, many renowned personalities remind us that there is no failure except in no longer trying.

But why do some of us fail in the pursuit of dreams and aspirations? Why don’t things work out even when we try? There are a few factors to take into consideration.

  1. Lack of well-defined purpose of life. Not knowing exactly what you want to achieve will get you turning round in circles with no concrete aim to work towards.
  2. Sometimes we do know what we want to achieve, but lack ambition–will-power and self-discipline to move forward without sacrifice. Nothing comes easy and sacrificing is a part of the process which gets us closer to our goal.
  3. That leads us to persistence. You may be a good starter, enthusiastic and zealous, but being a bad finisher is a trait which will keep you stagnant.
  4. Fear stops majority of us from trying to achieve our goals.  Fear of poverty, criticism, taking risks and failing, keep us in our comfort zone and just like it implies, we stay in the same place with little progress.
  5. According to our society, it is seen as credible to become a doctor, a lawyer or any profession of high status. Very often we choose the wrong profession and become somebody we are not. This is a perfect recipe to unhappiness, indifference and dormancy.

If you are going through some tough moments in life, it is time to sit up and get your act together. We are the creators of how we live our lives through the choices we make. No excuses. Take responsibility. Define your purpose of life! Discipline yourself! Be a good finisher! Do not fear the fall, catch the wind and you shall fly! Follow your heart and passion and everything else should naturally fall into place!

Starbucks to serve smoothies and kale

Watch out world. Starbucks announced that it will start selling smoothies this year.

After abandoning the first phase of its Race Together campaign, Starbucks is now edging its way into the health food market with the introduction of smoothies.

According to Huffington Post, Starbucks struck a deal with Dannon and Evolution Fresh to create a line of smoothies that come in Strawberry, Mango Carrot, and Sweet Green flavors.

The smoothies will be made from fruit, vegetable juices, Greek-nonfat yogurt, nutmeg, and ice. There were be no added color or preservatives and customers will have the option to add fresh kale and protein powder to their drink. The smoothies are estimated to cost $5.95.

It may be a while before the smoothies are offered nationwide though. According to Reuters, they will only be offered at shops in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Alaska, and Idaho.

Starbucks also announced in a press release that it will serve two new wraps starting March 31. The Thai-Style Chicken Peanut Wrap and The Edamame Hummus Wrap will both be under 500 calories, stated the press release.
